My great grandfather, John McArthur, was born in Perthshire on November 10, 1830. his parents were John McArthur and Catherine McGibbon according to the record of his second marriage in Ontario. The record of his first marriage in Quebec is so faint as to be illegible but it is quite brief and does not appear to list the parents. According to the family story (accuracy unknown) his mother died of smallpox before she got off the boat in Halifax harbor. I have been able to find nothing to prove or disprove this.
He was said to be related to the McArthurs in the Dalesville, Quebec area some of whom were from Glen Lyon. I have also been unable to find a record of his birth or his parents' marriage in the IGI or Scotland's People. The family was Baptist so the records may not exist, or may not have been transcribed.
Since they spoke Gaelic what spellings should I be looking for. |
