I have in my possession a set of photographs from an album which belonged to Alexander Stewart of Woodend and his wife Catherine Dewar. The album has perished, but the photographs, mostly little carte de visite prints, remain. These studio photographs of friends and relatives date from between 1860 and 1901. Some have been named on the back. The surnames on named photographs are Cameron, Dewar, McDiarmid, McPherson, Stewart and Reid. Many are unidentified.
I have posted scans of the photographs, with any details I hope might help to identify them, to a web site at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/gallopede/ . I have also made some amateurish attempts at dating them. If any of these pictures might be relatives of yours then you are very welcome to take copies of the photographs for your own albums. In return I would be grateful if you could send me any details you have of the identity of the sitters.
I am also curious about the photographic studios, especially Allan McMaster of Aberfeldy. The photograph taken by Allan McMaster can be fount at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/gallopede/StewartPhotographsPages/Aberfeldy.htm.
There was a craze in the late 19th century for collecting these little portraits. Do any other albums survive from Glenlyon? |
